Today GKM was featured in a CNNMoney article about innovative ideas designed to prevent and combat the epidemic of childhood obesity. The article, 5 Innovators Fight Childhood Obesity, features creators of products and ideas that help families and communities fight the obesity problem as it continues to rise.

We do encourage you to read the entire CNNMoney article. Below is the section of the article that highlights Get Kids Moving!

Flash cards that get tots jumping

Company: Getkidsmoving

Location: Cleveland, OH

Product: Activity cards for toddlers

When Jenny Chrisman was homeschooling her three-year-old twin girls in 2003, she found herself running out of ideas to keep them active and entertained. “The winter time was especially difficult because they spent so much time indoors,” she said.

Chrisman decided to invent an educational product for preschoolers that would keep kids active inside or outdoors. She spent the next two years researching kids’ brain development patterns and the importance of physical fitness for young children.

She applied what she learned into creating “Exercards.” It’s a set of 26 cards, each of which demonstrates a fun physical activity and includes a built-in lesson. On the “tick tock tippy toe” card, an animated dog teaches kids to exercise their calves by going up and down on their toes. He also teaches kids to move their arms like the hands of a clock.

“So kids are exercising and learning about the hours of the day at the same time,” said Chrisman. On the opposite side of each card is a letter of the alphabet so kids can engage in quiet learning too.

“I tried them on my girls first and they loved them,” said Chrisman. Chrisman spent about $5,000 to print 1,000 sets of the cards in 2007. She sold them online for $10 each and through toy stores in her area.

A year later, Creative Child Magazine gave her product the “Seal of Excellence Award.”

“As a parent, I felt it was very important for me to instill healthy food and lifestyle habits in my kids,” said Chrisman. “If we help children develop these habits early, hopefully we’ll be able to tackle the obesity epidemic in this country.”

Their bodies rebel, and they wind up miserable, wondering why anyone would possibly want to do this to themselves.

You should ease into your running program gradually. In fact, the beginners’ program we outline here is less of a running regimen than a walking and jogging program. The idea is to transform you from couch potato to runner, getting you running three miles (or 5K) on a regular basis in just two months.

No one likes to feel sick and sluggish. Eating a balanced diet, exercising and starting each day with a positive attitude go a long way to keeping your body and mind healthy. Making wise nutritional choices is important whether you are a kid or an adult. How to make those choices is the challenge most of us face. READ MORE

I remember when my kids were very young, and the only thing their dad had to say at the table was “clean your plate”, to which I would always respond that they don’t need to! Even after spending years of trying to get him to see the healthier side of things he would still say “finish your meat”, to which I would respond “no, they don’t need to. The healthiest things on their plate were the vegetables they already finished.”!!!

10 Reasons to Abolish the Clean Plate Club

American kids are taught to clean their plates. “There are children starving in Africa”, is the mantra they hear repeated throughout their young lives. So, one may wonder, how does stuffing my face here in Peoria help end world hunger? The truth is, it’s time to put that idea to bed, and we’ll give you ten reasons why. Here then, are 10 reasons to abolish the Clean Plate Club:

Haven’t we been saying this for years? Plead with your school to incorporate physical activities into the school day. Try your best to see that your kids get enough out of school. Beginning of the day is optimal!!!

Sound body, sound mind has long been the accepted wisdom.

But schools have traditionally promoted brains and brawn separately.

Not so at Naperville Central High School west of Chicago. Here the kids who struggle with math and reading go to gym class first.

“What we’re trying to do here is jump start their brain,” says Paul Zientarski, chairman of the Physical Education Department at Naperville.

So the very first class of the day is physical education.

And at Naperville, exercise isn’t confined to the gym. There are bikes and balls right in the classroom. Even in reading class, these kids are constantly on the move. READ MORE

So how do you keep everyone healthy? Well, for starters (and I don’t mean appetizers) let the kids follow the clues of their bodies. If they don’t want to take the time to eat a meal, but want to play outside all day, they still need to be staying hydrated and getting some nutrition. Small, light meals or snacks are great for this!

Often times I will just let me kids play, play, play and have “snacks” out for them at their ready. I know they’ll eventually find their way in and am happy that they will find something yummy and healthful on the table. I have found that if I ask what they want, I don’t always get a response requesting a healthy item. So, instead of asking…I have just started placing things out, and guess what…it all gets eaten!!

I may put out a tray of fresh fruit and some cheese.

I may put out some crackers or pretzels, some cut-up veggies and a healthy dip.

I may put a sign out listing items to be found in the fridge or freezer (like whole fruit bars, frozen fruit for smoothie-making… )

I’ll set up a water bar where the kids can choose how to flavor their water

include slices of lemons, limes, oranges, cucumber, strawberries, melon…

just have them add the fruit item to the glass then pour the water over it
