I almost never buy junk food (cookies, chips, pop...). We only have it in the house if it's after a holiday (like Halloween) or a birthday party that we've hosted here. Eliminating the junk food as a snack choice option is a great way to get my kids to like the healthier foods.
After school I'll slice some apples or put out a bowl of fruit. I encourage yogurt, cheese slices or a glass of chocolate milk made with Ovaltine. If they want a "crunchy" snack, I'll usually allow some pretzels and cheese crackers. I like to mix nuts with just a few dark chocolate morsels; even a handful of nuts per day is good for them. Most days, I don't even ask them what they want; I just put something out and they always eat it!
